Build or Sell
The Founder's Dilemma
Hello! If you are new here check out my first post:
Starting a Business - Do you Build or Sell?
I used to think only software developers could be founders.
My idea of entrepreneurship was build an app, raise funding, get customers, and become a $1B company.
While the recipe may be that simple, a lot more goes on behind closed doors.
People need to be managed, investors need to understand your market and value, the public needs to become aware of our product or service, and people must buy what you are offering.
That’s a lot of work for one person. Most of us won’t be able to acquire the skills to do all of these things.
That is why every business needs a Builder and a Seller.
The Silicon Valley Startup Model tends to work best when you have two founders. One of whom is world-class at Sales and one of whom is world-class at Building.
You have an idea and vision but can’t build you must be come exceptional at selling your dream. You need to find others to help build your vision.
If you are a builder you must build something that can be shared with the world. A great product will attract someone who sees the potential and will build a story to get others interested.
One is not better than the other. Both work along side each other to build a company as a whole.
The story of how Apple was founded is a great example.
Jobs saw how the personal computer would be used in households. Woz was the hacker who brought the vision to life.
Jobs sold the story of Apple Computers while Woz built something the user could interact with.
If you are starting a business look for a co-founder with the opposite skill of you.
Which one are you?
Builder 🧱
“The Coder”
Build a product and share it publicly. Other builders will recognize what you are working on and provide feedback. Use this feedback to improve and build a community.
Sellers will catch wind of what you are building. If someone finds what you are working on interesting they will naturally share it with others. When someone shares something with their network they will naturally sell the product, they want to get people as interested in “the thing” as they are.
Seller 💼
“The Storyteller”
As a seller the biggest obstacle you must overcome is the “Imposter Syndrome.” Having not actually created anything you may doubt or question you abilities. This is an opportunity to grow. Share what you are passionate about, learn from others, and collaborate.
With enough research you will become a domain expert and share what you have learned. Others will be inspired by your journey and want to join along. With enough interest others will want to tag along to bring your vision to life.
Those who say design subscription services don't scale are dumb.
Today, I literally could:
- find a designer
- pay them $12k/month
- give them 10 clients @ $5k/m
- Net $38k/m in profit
- Repeat this process to infinityHow's that for scaling.
